Son No.1

Introduction

When I first came to Indonesia at the end of 1987, I told Son No.1 that I’d be where he could find me until he was 18. He was then 11, and I’m still here. Rather than me visiting him in Blighty, I paid for his airfare etc. so we could travel together through the archipelago.

I generally kept a diary of our travels. It might not be as analytical as that of, say, Norman Lewis who visited the political hotspots of Aceh and East Timor, and then published An Empire of the East. Yet from our more limited perspective we too learned a lot, and both of us continue to explore.

Back then chronicling one’s travels was a more thoughtful process, a matter of putting pen to paper. Now that we have internet access, I have done some minor editing and added links where appropriate. I’ve also adjusted the ‘time’ of each post so that they are in chronological order of our travels.

Sam now owns a travel company in London with a specific focus on south-east Asia. As he is comped by airlines and posh hotels, I sometimes get to join him, and visit parts of this country I might not otherwise get to see.
